Blog Reflection #3 Journal Entry

Being introduced to other search engines is a great opportunity for students doing research and anyone searching for correct and updated information. I feel that having more than one search option to research a topic with adds a positive element to research. It is true that the web based Wikipedia often seems to have the information being sought but this information should be compared to or used in combination with other information found using more specialized searches. I have found that comparing and combining information from different sources is a better process while composing an informative and well researched paper.
Getting students to use other search engines should start at an early age. Family members, teachers, library staff should all offer the research web engines needed when a student asks for help with researching a subject Also, posting college library catalogs and other library catalogs as is shown on LBCC’s library home page, in easy viewing in the library would be helpful. Learning to research the right way will go a long way in preparing students, library patrons, and internet users to performing a well completed reference search.

  1. Hey Gloria,

I like how you made a statement regarding getting younger generation to start using different search engines. Sometime you got to look at this way as well. Some yonger generation doesnt like to sit for hours just using different search engines, all they know is yahoo, google, and bing or Wikipedia. Me personally hate using different search engines. It is time consuming.

  2. I think you are on the right track when you say that students should learn to use search engines as early as possible. I think that they need to learn that computers can be used for educational purposes and not just for playing games. This can help prepare them for the real world where they will use computers as tools and not just toys

  3. Hi Gloria,

I think you are right about the fact that having more than one search option could be beneficial to us in research and that we should be taught this starting at a young age. People are being taught research method as early as elementary. So, why not teach them that research is useful through their library not just the Internet.

I agree Getting students to use different search engines should start at an early age, giving them as much of a running start at available resources is a key part of their success.
